What to look for in a toothbrush?

It’s important to choose a toothbrush that feels comfortable and easy to use.

It’s no secret that proper oral hygiene is key when it comes to maintaining a healthy smile in the long term. In fact, keeping your teeth and gums in good condition can benefit your overall health as well. One of the best things you can do to take care of your smile is to brush your teeth at least twice every day. So, it’s worth getting your technique right and choosing a good-quality toothbrush to do so. But how do you know which type of toothbrush is best? Read on for our tips on choosing the right toothbrush and keeping your oral health on track…

Consider the size

When it comes to choosing a toothbrush, it is advisable that you look for one that will make it easy to access and clean all the surfaces of your teeth. Generally, the head should be a little more than one centimetre wide and two and a half centimetres tall — this size is easy to manoeuvre around the mouth and you should find it easy to clean your teeth thoroughly. Toothbrushes that are larger than this tend to be more difficult to move around all areas of the mouth, making it hard to clean hard-to-reach teeth, especially those located at the back of the mouth.

Choose soft bristles

When you are looking for a new toothbrush, you will notice a choice of soft, medium and hard bristles. Although dental needs differ from person to person, most people benefit from choosing a toothbrush with soft bristles. Medium and hard bristles, coupled with frequent and vigorous brushing, can cause damage to the enamel of your teeth, as well as the gums. Soft bristles, on the other hand, are a safer option and will keep your teeth clean without causing excessive wear and tear.

Go for comfort

When it comes to choosing a style of toothbrush, you will have a few different choices, such as a flexible neck or a non-slip grip; a tapered or rectangular head; and rippled or flat bristles. These choices can be overwhelming, but the most important thing to bear in mind is that you need to feel comfortable when brushing your teeth. Simply choose a toothbrush that fits your mouth well, that reaches all the surfaces of your teeth, and that feels comfortable while you are using it.

Replace your toothbrush regularly

No matter which type of toothbrush you choose to use, it is important that you replace it every few months. If you notice any wear and tear or missing bristles, it’s probably time for a replacement. Also, if you have been sick with a cold or flu, it is advisable that you replace your toothbrush as germs can accumulate in the bristles.
