Do you have difficulty sleeping at night? Does your partner complain about snoring?

Types of sleep apnea

The main types of sleep apnea are: obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), central sleep apnea (CSA), and mixed sleep apnea.

Obstructive sleep apnea is the most common type. Once the body reaches a relaxed state, the muscles begin to ease which allows the upper airway to block the regular flow of air in and out of the nose and mouth causing loud snoring and an interrupted breathing pattern. Breathing can pause for up to 40 seconds at a time which forces the body to send a signal to the brain to wake up.

Central sleep apnea is a condition where the patient has an open airway, however there’s a communication problem between the brain and the body that hinders natural breathing – people who suffer from CSA typically don’t snore.

Mixed sleep apnea or complex sleep apnea is a combination of both OSA and CSA.
